Diamond surveys what traditional societies — those operating without states, banks, or formal legal systems — actually solved: dispute resolution, child-rearing, elder care, risk-pooling. What strikes me is how many of these mechanisms are precisely what formal financial institutions claim to replace, and how rarely the formal version outperforms the traditional one on outcomes that matter to people on the edge of subsistence.
